There is a big jazz concert scheduled here in Phoenix over at the Celebrity Theater on Dec 30. The ticket brokers are calling it “KYOT Fall Fest” for some odd reason (it’s in the middle of winter fer cryin’ out loud!). But the KYOT, the local smooth jazz station KYOT is saying this about the concert:

Eric Patrick Clapton CBE (born March 30, 1945), nicknamed “Slowhand”, is a Grammy Award winning English guitarist, singer and composer, who is one of the most respected and influential musicians of the rock era, garnering an unprecedented three inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Although Clapton’s musical style has varied throughout his career, it has always remained rooted in the blues. Clapton is credited as an innovator in several phases of his career, which have included blues rock (with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and The Yardbirds) and psychedelic rock (with Cream). Clapton has also achieved great chart success in genres ranging from Delta blues (Me and Mr. Johnson) to pop (”Change the World”) and reggae (”I Shot the Sheriff”).

So says Clapton’s wiki. It turns out that ol’ Slowhand has a tour lined up in 2007 and is making a stop in Phoenix at the US Airways Center. This show is sure to be big so if you are having trouble finding tickets you want here is where we recommend you hunt online:

Let’s face it, the Orlando Magic haven’t been very good since Shaq left a million or so years ago. But have you seen this kid Dwight Howard play? He is pretty phenomenal — especially for how young he is. The Magic are actually looking a lot more solid these days. That’s not to say they are anywhere near as good as the Suns, but you never know who is gonna bring their A game to the desert with them so this could be a good one.

It used to be that the idea of the Cleveland Cavaliers coming to town to play your Phoenix Suns was greeted with a mighty yawn. My how things have changed. With the NBA’s poster boy Lebron James leading the team now, a visit from the Cavs is almost a guaranteed sell out now. Who woulda thunk it? Well you have to admit that watching Lebron and his boys taking on Nash, Marion, Amare, Diaw and friends does sound intriguing.

Yes, the Harlem Globetrotters are still around. Word has it they still put on a good show too. The good news for us in the desert is they are bringing their traveling show to the US Airways Center in Phoenix soon. The Globetrotters wiki says:

The Harlem Globetrotters are a basketball team that combines athleticism and comedy to create one of the best-known sports entertainment franchises in the world. Created by Abe Saperstein in 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, the team adopted the name Harlem because of its connotations as a leading African-American community. Disney On Ice is coming back to Phoenix. The latest variation on the show is called “Disney On Ice: Disneyland Adventure” whatever that means. I took my little girls to Disney on ice a few years back and they liked it. I survived too. One this is for sure, these things tend to do really well and even sell out on occasion. The wiki says this:

Disney on Ice is a touring ice show produced by Feld Entertainment under agreement with The Walt Disney Company. Aimed primarily at children, the shows feature figure skaters dressed as Disney cartoon characters in performances that derive music and plot from the various Disney films; the “stars” of the show are the Disney characters themselves rather than the skaters.

The annual Phoenix Suns Vs. Seattle Supersonics series is on its way again this year and it looks to be a good series. The Sonics led by Ray Allen appear to be somewhat resurgent as of late and you Phoenix Suns are hoping to remain the powerhouses they have long been in the West.

Local rock legend Alice Cooper has an upcoming show scheduled at the Dodge Theater here is Phoenix. For those of you old enough to remember, Alice was a scary menacing rock star in the 70s. It turns out that he is really an intelligent, well-spoken, amusing guy and has since had lots of fun poking fun at himself and his on stage image (a la Shatner or someone like that.) He is well renowned as a humdinger of a golfer too.

But fans haven’t forgotten that Alice Cooper was first a rocker so getting a chance to see him perform live a club like the Dodge Theater is something die hard fans won’t want to miss. (He has the advantage of being old enough to attract the often-affluent baby boomer crowd now too.)

For some reason tickets to the Golden State Warriors at the Phoenix Suns are not nearly as expensive as tickets to the games when the top contenders from the big markets in the NBA come to Arizona. Hmmm — wonder why… Well anyway, if you are from the Bay Area just count it as good luck and get your tickets before the Warriors stop being so mediocre and thus increase the value of their tickets.

The RoadRunners wiki says this:

The Phoenix RoadRunners are an ECHL hockey team that began play in the 2005-2006 season in Phoenix, Arizona. The team is owned by the same group as the Phoenix Suns and the Phoenix Mercury and also plays in the US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix. The team president is Claude Lemieux. There also used to be a minor league hockey team in Phoenix named the RoadRunners on two different occasions, and the team will attempt to preserve some of the traditions and history of the old teams.

Sure, it ain’t the NHL, but there is some good hockey to be seen down at the US Airways Center. If you are hunting for tickets here are some places to look:

As ever, there is an upcoming Phoenix Suns Vs. Miami Heat scheduled here in Arizona at the US Airways Center. It turns out that the Heat don’t suck so tickets to this game are hard to come by. What with D-Wade and Shaq and all (not to mention that NBA trophy) the Heat are a big draw and will pose a good early season challenge for your Suns. So if you need decent tickets to this game here is where you should look:

Legendary blues man B.B. King is coming to Phoenix for a concert at the Dodge Theater. BB’s wiki has this to say about him:

Riley B. King aka B. B. King (born September 16, 1925) is an American blues guitarist and singer-songwriter. He is widely considered one of the best (and most respected) blues musicians in the world. One of his trademarks is “Lucille”, a custom guitar he began using in the 1950s.

Dang… the guy cracked 80 already and he is still rockin’ it. Good for him.

The legendary comedian Bill Cosby will be in town at the Dodge Theater soon. Cosby is fixin’ to crack 70 but he is still at it. I assume this tour is in support of his new comedy album reportedly called “The House of Blues Cosby”. His wiki says this about him:

William Henry “Bill” Cosby, Jr., Ed.D. (born July 12, 1937) is an American actor, comedian, television producer, and activist. He received an Ed.D. from the University of Massachusetts for his doctoral thesis on Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, an educational children’s cartoon series he created.

Hey, what screams “Christmas” more than a ballet about a girl who gets magically shrunken and then fights a magical evil rat king? Apparently not much. And once again there is a top-flight production of the Nutcracker playing this December in Phoenix. The music is as beautiful as ever and the dancing makes for a lovely experience every time. Here is a little trivia on the Nutcracker from the wiki:

The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик, English: Shchelkunchik), Op. 71, is a fairy-ballet in two acts, three tableaux, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1891–1892, and based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (German: Nußknacker und Mausekönig), a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1816). Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of the story was set to music by Tchaikovsky (after the libretto of Marius Petipa) and has become the most popular ballet performed around Christmas time. It is appealing to children and adults alike and has been a standard yearly feature of theatres in many cities. A selection of eight of the more popular numbers from the ballet was made by the composer, forming The Nutcracker Suite, designed for concert performance. What ever happened to pop diva’s having easy to spell single names like “Cher” or “Madonna”? You gotta hand it to the folks at Disney — they know how to promote their cra… err… stuff. They have created a newish batch of that stuff in the form of High School Musical - The Concert. If I have this right, I guess this is the traveling road show of the made for tv movie that my 9 year old daughter and her friends were very interested in called High School - The Musical, or High School Musical or something. I couldn’t bring myself to watch it but based on the ads it looks like dreamy hoops star longs to sing or some such nonsense. I’m sure drama and hilarity abounded…

A week before the BCS National Championship game is played here in Phoenix (well Glendale actually) the annual Fiesta Bowl will be played. The game is slated to feature the Big 12 champ (unless Texas or whoever can sneak into the championship game and an at-large team (I guess.) Any way you look at it the game will be a good one with two heavyweight college programs clashing on a massive stage.

Tickets won’t be cheap but they will seem cheap compared to the prices the championship game will cost. Here is how where you should look to find tickets to this game.

Look, we all know the BCS is a totally corrupt cartel that is designed to horde all the college football money for six insider conferences and which is dead set against any kind of playoff system that would tell us the actual national champion of Division I football every year… But that doesn’t mean going to the BCS championship game wouldn’t be fun anyway!

Yeah, it’s true that we don’t know who will play against Ohio State in the game yet this year. [Update: Looks like the University of Florida Gators are in and the Michigan Wolverines are out. Sorry Michigan — you may very well be the best team in the country but until they scrap this crapfest called the BCS and implement a playoff we’ll never know] But we do know it will be a sellout and that means that if you want to get in you’ll need to get them from the ticket brokers. So I guess lobbing drinks or at least jeers at Barbra Streisand has become all the rage on this latest world tour. It sounds like she has a skit poking fun at president Bush that audience members are not universally finding funny. So far she has been jeered in Philly and NYC and had a drink chucked her way in Florida.
