Chicago (The Musical) Tickets - in Phoenix

By: Spencinator    Category: Orpheum Theatre Tickets, Other

Chicago the Musical is coming to Phoenix for a few shows. If you are a fan come out to the Orpheum Theater. Here is some info from wiki:

Chicago is a Kander and Ebb musical set in prohibition era Chicago. The book is by Ebb and Bob Fosse. The story is a satire on corruption in the administration of criminal justice, and the concept of the “celebrity criminal.” The musical is based on a 1926 play of the same name by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins about actual criminals and crimes she had reported on.

The original 1975 Broadway production ran for a total of 936 performances. Bob Fosse choreographed the original production, and his style is strongly identified with the show. Chicago’s 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival on Broadway (not counting the revue Oh! Calcutta!) and, as of March 2, 2008, it has played for more than 4,684 performances. The revival was followed by a production on London’s West End and several tours and international productions. An Academy Award-winning film version of the musical was released in 2002.

25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee Tickets in Phoenix

By: Spencinator    Category: Orpheum Theatre Tickets, Other

Plays make me happy inside. For a limited time the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is coming to Phoenix. Come out to the Orpheum Theater for the fun. Here is some info from wiki:

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a one act musical comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. The show centers around a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups.

The 2005 Broadway production, directed by James Lapine, has earned good reviews and box-office success and was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the U.S., a national tour with performances two in Canada and Australian productions.

An unusual aspect of the show is that three or four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters. During the 2005 Tony Awards, former Presidential candidate Al Sharpton competed. Another amusing aspect of the show is that the official pronouncer, usually an improv comedian provides ridiculous usage-in-a-sentence examples when asked to use words in a sentence. For instance, for the word “palaestra,” he says, “Euripides said, ‘What happens at the palaestra stays at the palaestra.’” At some shows, adult-only audiences (over age 16) are invited for “Parent-Teacher Conferences,” also known as “adult night at the Bee.” These performances are peppered with sexual references and profanity inspired by R-rated ad-libs made during rehearsals.

California at Arizona State Basketball Tickets in Phoenix

By: Spencinator    Category: Sports, Wells Fargo Arena

The Berkeley Golden Bears are coming here to play Arizona State. The action can be found at the Wells Fargo Arena here in Phoenix. Here is some info from wiki:

The fortunes of Cal men’s basketball would never be the same after Pete Newell; as of 2007 Cal has not won a conference title since 1960. The 1970s and 1980s were for the most part down years for the program, despite having players such as Kevin Johnson. The highlight of this era was a 75–67 victory over UCLA in 1986 that ended a 25-year, 52 game losing streak to the Bruins.

Cal achieved much better success in the 1990s, qualifying for the NCAA tournament five times with future NBA players Jason Kidd and Lamond Murray in the early ’90s and Sean Lampley and Shareef Abdur-Rahim in the late ’90s. Cal also won the 1999 National Invitation Tournament, with a thrilling 61-60 victory over Clemson in the title game.
