Dane Cook Tickets in Phoenix

By: Spencinator    Category: Jobing.com (pronounced Jobbing.com) Arena Tickets, Other

Dane Cook is a comedian. He is coming to Phoenix to put on his act at the Jobing Arena. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Dane Cook’s style is principally energetic physical comedy. He combines observational humor and wordplay with a casual attitude. Cook says his onstage persona is a combination of the personalities of his mom, Donna, and his dad, George. “My mother is like a Looney Tunes cartoon. She’s wiggly,” Dane says. “She has the ability to tongue in cheek a lot, and do it in a way where she’s being physical. My dad is the polar opposite. He always had a little ‘what the fuck’ in his voice. Even if he knew nothing about what he was talking about, he could sell it. So I looked at these two extremely funny people and created a style of comedy from absorbing their actions.”

Sesame Street Live: Elmo’s Green Thumb Tickets in Phoenix

Elmo and his homies are coming to the Dodge Theater in Phoenix. Come to the show for fun. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Produced by Minneapolis-based VEE Corporation, the show opened on September 17, 1980, with a production of Sesame Street Live “Missing Bird Mystery” playing at the Met Center in Bloomington, Minnesota. Sesame Street Live is now produced as three or four separate tours, each performing a different show, with its own plot, characters, scenery, and soundtrack. Shows are performed in arenas and theatres around the world, generally working on an eight to ten month touring schedule ending in the spring and resuming in the late summer. While in the United States, Sesame Street Live is a bus and truck show, with the equipment moving by two or three trucks and the personnel travelling by bus. (This is contrasted with a show that travels by rail, such as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.) Outside of the United States, air cargo and sea containers are used.

The shows feature original music scores and songs, complemented with old favorites from the show, and professional dancers as costumed characters performing the parts of the Muppets. The productions are done in a theatrical style. In an arena, a stage is built and a false proscenium is created to make the experience more similar to going to a theatre.

Chicago is a Kander and Ebb musical set in prohibition era Chicago. The book is by Ebb and Bob Fosse. 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling Bee Tickets in Phoenix

By: Spencinator    Category: Orpheum Theatre Tickets, Other

Plays make me happy inside. For a limited time the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is coming to Phoenix. Come out to the Orpheum Theater for the fun. Here is some info from wiki:

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a one act musical comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn and a book by Rachel Sheinkin. The show centers around a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups.

The 2005 Broadway production, directed by James Lapine, has earned good reviews and box-office success and was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the U.S., a national tour with performances two in Canada and Australian productions.

An unusual aspect of the show is that three or four real audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters. During the 2005 Tony Awards, former Presidential candidate Al Sharpton competed. Another amusing aspect of the show is that the official pronouncer, usually an improv comedian provides ridiculous usage-in-a-sentence examples when asked to use words in a sentence. For instance, for the word “palaestra,” he says, “Euripides said, ‘What happens at the palaestra stays at the palaestra.’” At some shows, adult-only audiences (over age 16) are invited for “Parent-Teacher Conferences,” also known as “adult night at the Bee.” These performances are peppered with sexual references and profanity inspired by R-rated ad-libs made during rehearsals.

Moscow Ballets Great Russian Nutcracker Tickets in Phoenix

By: Spencinator    Category: Dodge Theatre, Other

The Moscow Ballet is coming to the Dodge Theater to preform the Nutcracker. Come to Phoenix for the event. Here is some info from wiki:

The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик) Op. 71, is a fairy tale-ballet in two acts, three tableaux, by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1891–92, and based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (German: Der Nussknacker und der Mäusekönig), a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1816). Alexandre Dumas père’s adaptation of the story was set to music by Tchaikovsky (after a libretto possibly written by Marius Petipa and commissioned by the administrator of the Imperial Theatres Ivan Vsevolozhsky in 1891).

In Western countries, this ballet has become among the most popular ballets performed, primarily around Christmas time.

A selection of eight of the more popular numbers from the ballet was made by the composer before the ballet’s December 1892 premiere, forming The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a, intended for concert performance. The suite was first performed, under the composer’s direction, on 19 March 1892 at an assembly of the St. Petersburg branch of the Musical Society. The suite became instantly popular; the complete ballet did not achieve its great popularity until around the mid-1960s. Some indication of how much The Nutcracker Suite once eclipsed the fame of the ballet may be found in Deems Taylor’s commentary in the roadshow version of Walt Disney’s 1940 animated film Fantasia, which features the suite as one of the animated segments. Taylor observes matter-of-factly, “[The ballet] isn’t performed anymore”, a statement which certainly does not hold true today, and, indeed, has not been true since the mid-1950s, when George Balanchine’s production achieved great popularity in New York.
