The 39 Steps is a play adapted from the 1915 novel by John Buchan and the 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. Patrick Barlow wrote the adaptation, based on the original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon of a two-actor version of the play. Barlow had originally intended to portray the character of Richard Hannay, but focused solely on rewriting the original version

Avenue Q is coming to the ASU Gammage Theater in Phoenix. You go and see it and tell me how it is. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Avenue Q is a musical conceived by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, who wrote the music and lyrics, and directed by Jason Moore. The book is by Jeff Whitty. The show was produced by and opened at the Off-Broadway Vineyard Theatre in March 2003. The production transferred to Broadway in July 2003 and won several Tony Awards, including the award for Best Musical. It is still running on Broadway and holds the position of 23rd longest running show in Broadway history. The show has spawned a 2005 Las Vegas production, a 2006 West End production and various international productions. A U.S. national tour began in July 2007 and will end in May 2009.

The show is largely inspired by (and is in the style of) Sesame Street: Most of the characters in the show are puppets (operated by actors onstage), the set depicts several tenements on a rundown street in an Outer Borough of New York City, both the live characters and puppet characters sing, and short animated video clips are played as part of the story.

The Phantom of the Opera (in French, Le Fantôme de l’Opéra) is a French novel by Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialization in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. Initially, the novel sold very poorly and was even out of print several times during the twentieth century. Today, it is considered to be a classic of French literature, though it is overshadowed by its many subsequent adaptations. The novel was translated into English in 1911. It has since been adapted many times into film and stage productions, the most notable of which were the 1925 film depiction and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical. The Phantom of the Opera musical is now the longest running Broadway show in history, and one of the most lucrative entertainment enterprises of all time.

I have only heard good things about it. Wicked will be at the ASU Gammage Theater soon. Here is some info from wikipedia:

Wicked tells the story of Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. (In the album notes, Gregory Maguire explained that he derived the name “Elphaba” from the initials of L. Frank Baum.) Their friendship struggles through their opposing personalities and viewpoints, rivalry over the same love-interest, their reactions to the Wizard’s corrupt government, and, ultimately, Elphaba’s public fall from grace. The plot is set mostly before Dorothy’s arrival from Kansas, and includes several references to well-known scenes and dialogue in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz as a backstory.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car is a children’s book written by Ian Fleming (creator of James Bond) for his son Caspar, with illustrations by John Burningham. It was first published in 1964 by Jonathan Cape in London and Random House in New York, and later made into a successful film.

Writer Ian Fleming took his inspiration for the car from a series of aero-engined racing cars built by Count Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s at Higham Park, christened “Chitty Bang Bang”. Fleming had known Higham Park as a guest of its later owner, Walter Wigham, chairman of Robert Fleming & Co.

Here is some info on the show from the wiki:

Sesame Street Live is the live touring show based on the children’s television show Sesame Street.

Produced by Minneapolis-based VEE Corporation, the show opened on September 17, 1980, with a production of Sesame Street Live “Missing Bird Mystery” playing at the Met Center in Bloomington, MN. Sesame Street Live is now produced as three or four separate tours, each performing a different show, with its own plot, characters, scenery, and soundtrack. Shows are performed in arenas and theatres around the world, generally working on an eight to ten month touring schedule ending in the spring and resuming in the late summer. While in the United States, Sesame Street Live is a bus and truck show, with the equipment moving by two or three trucks and the personnel travelling by bus. (This is contrasted with a show that travels by rail, such as the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus.) Outside of the US, air cargo and sea containers are used.

The shows feature original music scores and songs, complemented with old favorites from the show, and professional dancers as costumed characters performing the parts of the Muppets. The productions are done in a theatrical style. In an arena, a stage is built and a false proscenium is created to make the experience more similar to going to a theatre.

It ought to be a blast for the kids. If you are having trouble finding tickets to this show at the Dogde Theater box office here is where you should look for after market tickets:

Ok so My Little Pony Live is coming to Jobing.com arena in Glendale soon. It turns out that this show is produced by the same people who do Sesame Street Live. The idea is that it is like a play (musical actually) but the actors are the My Little Pony, umm, ponies. My Little Pony has been a favorite for little girls for a long time now. We get this from wikipedia:

My Little Pony is a product line of colorful toy ponies marketed to young girls, and is produced by Hasbro. On some occasions they have also appealed to boys. The toys were first introduced in 1982, following the related “My Pretty Pony” toy which was introduced in 1981. They became enormously popular throughout that decade. The original toy line inspired several animated specials, an animated feature length movie, and two animated television series. Redesigned toys have been introduced to the market twice since then, one near the end of 1997 and again in mid-2003. Collectors refer to each line as a “generation,” often referring to each as G1, G2 and G3.

All three My Little Pony lines consist of plastic ponies with brushable manes and tails. Their hair and body colors are fanciful and span every color of the rainbow. They are not meant to look like real horses. Each has a specific symbol located on its haunch or rear-end that allows it to be identified. Some ponies have marks that stretch over their backs and sides or can be found on their cheeks and foreheads, as well as haunches. However, there were a few released with no symbols at all. There are various types including, but not limited to, Unicorn, Pegasus and the seahorse-like Seapony. The My Little Pony line has and continues to experiment with a variety of body types and fantastic designs but always manages to maintain a horse’s guise.

Ok, so I guess Chita Rivera is a famous dancer from back in the day. She became a huge star on Broadway in the 50’s. Apparently she remains a star in the eyes of a lot of people because the ticket brokers have bought up a lot of tickets to this show (and that means they expect it to sell out.) Well if that is the case then I say good for Ms. Rivera. (I must admit; she does have a pretty cool name.)

Anyway, if you are looking to see this show at the Gammage Auditorium over at ASU in Tempe (Phoenix) and aren’t finding what you need at the box office here is where you should shop:

AIW Tickets has tickets to three shows starting at $85
Stubhub is worth checking
TicketsNow has tickets at $95

And if that doesn’t cut it for you try shopping at these ticket vendors:

When I was a kid a had an embarrassing moment at a magic show. We kids were sitting in front of the stage and the magician did a trick where he dropped a guillotine on an audience member’s head, severing a carrot but leaving the head of the person untouched. It was a pretty cool trick actually. The thing was that the severed carrot fell in front of the stage where I was sitting. I picked it up and looked around wondering I should do with this carrot (I mean it could have been still needed for the show right?) The girl next to me told me to throw it back on stage. In retrospect I now know that she meant just toss it gently back up there… but at the time I hauled back and hucked it at the magician. It grazed his ear as it whizzed by. He wasn’t amused. He asked for the parents of the kid in the front to come get me. My dad wasn’t too pleased either.

Anyway, I don’t recommend you huck any carrots at David Copperfield if you go to this show. Tickets ain’t cheap and you’d probably get tossed from the Dogde Theater is you did…

Cedric the Entertainer (born Cedric Antonio Kyles, April 24, 1964 in Jefferson City, Missouri) is an American actor and comedian. The self-assumed title “The Entertainer” comes from his early days as a comedian when he also sang and danced… In 1996, Cedric moved into acting, playing Steve Harvey’s friend, Cedric Jackie Robinson, on his sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show.
Here’s a summary of the musical from wiki in case you have no idea what this muscial is about:

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a musical comedy with music by William Finn centering around a fictional spelling bee in a geographically ambiguous “Putnam County”.

One unusual aspect of the show is that real audience members are invited to compete in the spelling bee alongside the performers. Each performance, four audience members compete against six actors. During the 2005 Tony Awards, former Presidential candidate Al Sharpton had a cameo as one of the competitors. Another unusual aspect of the show is its periodic “Parent-Teacher Conferences,” also known as “adult night at the Bee,” in which audience members must be over 17 to attend. These performances are peppered with sexual references and cursing, and grew from R-rated ad-libs made during rehearsals.

The musical was based upon C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E, an original play by The Farm, a New-York-based improvisational comedy troupe.

Hey, what screams “Christmas” more than a ballet about a girl who gets magically shrunken and then fights a magical evil rat king? Apparently not much. And once again there is a top-flight production of the Nutcracker playing this December in Phoenix. The music is as beautiful as ever and the dancing makes for a lovely experience every time. Here is a little trivia on the Nutcracker from the wiki:

The Nutcracker (Russian: Щелкунчик, English: Shchelkunchik), Op. 71, is a fairy-ballet in two acts, three tableaux, by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composed in 1891–1892, and based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (German: Nußknacker und Mausekönig), a story by E. T. A. Hoffmann (1816). Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of the story was set to music by Tchaikovsky (after the libretto of Marius Petipa) and has become the most popular ballet performed around Christmas time. It is appealing to children and adults alike and has been a standard yearly feature of theatres in many cities. A selection of eight of the more popular numbers from the ballet was made by the composer, forming The Nutcracker Suite, designed for concert performance. The titles of the ballet (simply The Nutcracker) and the suite (The Nutcracker Suite) are frequently confused.

Tchaikovsky composed the ballet in 1891–1892, but he was unsatisfied with it and considered it to be one of his less successful pieces.

The first performance of the ballet was held as a double premiere together with Tchaikovsky’s last opera Iolanta on December 6/18, 1892, at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia. The ballet was conducted by Riccardo Drigo and choreographed by Lev Ivanov. However, this performance had just limited success.

The current popularity of The Nutcracker is due in part to Willam Christensen, former Ballet master of the San Francisco Ballet, who imported the work to the United States in 1944. The success of the ballet and George Balanchine’s choreography for his own 1954 version created a winter tradition of Nutcracker performances in the United States.

Blue Man Group (BMG) is a creative organization centered on a trio of mute performers, called Blue Men, that present themselves in blue paint, latex bald caps, and black clothing.

Blue Man Group’s theatrical acts incorporate rock music (with an emphasis on percussion), odd props, audience participation, sophisticated lighting, and large amounts of paper. It is also noted for having a “poncho section” of the audience; in the front rows, audience members are provided with plastic ponchos in order to protect them from various foods, substances, paints, and so on, which get thrown, ejected, or sprayed from the stage. The shows are family-oriented, humorous, energetic and often employ thought-provoking satire on modern life. Much of the humor breaks the fourth wall, for example, interrupting the show to ridicule latecomers in the audience.
